Dedication, not will power
Found this quote from a commenter on John Is Fit’s post about backsliding all the way back to fat pants…and I just love it – thank you Lori from Finding Radiance!
One thing I would suggest – you don’t need willpower. You need dedication. Become dedicated to one thing this week, whether that is tracking your food, getting in your water, exercising. Dedicate yourself fully to that one thing. Then, add another. That is how you slowly build a rock solid path that becomes easier to stay on and more difficult to stray from.
This is especially important since I backslid a bit yesterday. I drank a glass of wine and had some crackers and cheese, and then I did it again and again. I did much better than I would have normally:
- I didn’t start drinking until after 9pm – I held off by taking the dogs for a walk, going to Home Depot and taking a long shower. Otherwise, I’d have started drinking at 6pm and gotten into a second bottle of wine and a bunch of unhealthy snacks.
- I kept counting my calories and logging the food – I had string cheese and very thin crackers that I counted out before I ate them.
- I did not cave into cravings for chips or candy – We don’t even have chips in the house (thank God DH bought crackers-and-cheese snacks rather than chips-and-dips snacks) so that was easy, but we do have some yummy Milano cookies and Lemon iced cookies and I resisted.
- I went on a slightly longer walk than usual with the dogs in order to distract myself from drinking, but the additional calorie burn was a total bonus.
So part of me wants to post that I feel guilty and ashamed of myself for caving and not earning my “1200 calories” gold star, but I don’t really. I still feel good that I’ll have a good weigh-in tomorrow and that I made smart choices that may not be inline with a “diet” but are totally in line with a “lifestyle change.” Tonight, the challenge is to go to the bar to celebrate a friend’s completion of the MS150 bike race.
